OBD-II fault code

P08A7: Clutch Pedal Position Sensor A Circuit/Open

What it means

The clutch pedal position sensor A reports a circuit/open fault. Pedal position cannot be measured reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Clutch pedal position sensor A reports pedal movement to the vehicle’s control module so it can coordinate clutch-related functions and, where fitted, gear changes. This code sets when the sensor A circuit is detected as open, leaving the module without a reliable pedal-position signal.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live clutch pedal sensor A data while slowly pressing and releasing the pedal to see whether the reading is absent or drops out.
  2. Inspect sensor A’s connector for a loose plug, corrosion, damaged wiring, or a terminal pushed back into the connector body.
  3. Trace the sensor A wiring using the vehicle diagram and check for an open between the sensor and control module, including at connector terminals.
  4. Check the sensor circuit’s supply and ground as specified by the manufacturer to distinguish a wiring open from a failed sensor.
  5. If the circuit reaches the sensor correctly, test sensor A’s output against the manufacturer’s specification through pedal travel.

Common fixes

  • Reseat the sensor A connector and secure any loose harness routing.
  • Repair an open wire or replace a pushed-back or damaged connector terminal.
  • Replace clutch pedal position sensor A if its output is absent despite a sound circuit.
  • Clear the code and confirm the sensor reading changes consistently as the pedal moves.

Can I keep driving?

If the pedal signal is unreliable, shifting or clutch-related functions may be affected; avoid driving in traffic if gears are difficult to select. Stop if the vehicle cannot shift predictably, and do not assume the clutch pedal signal will remain available.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
