What it means
The neutral position sensor A reports a circuit intermittent/erratic fault. Verification of true neutral position is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Neutral position sensor A sends a position signal to the TCM so it can verify neutral. P086E sets when that signal changes erratically or drops out intermittently, often because of a loose connection, damaged wiring, or a failing sensor.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring fault
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review any recorded sensor A status changes, then monitor the live signal while shifting through the ranges.
- Inspect sensor A’s connector for loose fit, corrosion, damaged terminals, or a pin that moves in the connector body.
- Check the harness for chafing or damage, and gently move accessible wiring while watching the live signal for dropouts.
- Check circuit continuity and terminal tension using the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s procedure, paying attention to sections that move or vibrate.
- If the circuit remains stable during testing, check sensor A for an intermittent internal fault and replace it if it fails.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose connector and restore proper terminal contact.
- Repair chafed or broken sensor A wiring and secure the harness away from moving or hot parts.
- Clean or replace corroded connector terminals.
- Replace neutral position sensor A if its signal continues to drop out with a sound circuit.
Can I keep driving?
Intermittent position loss can trigger abnormal shifts or limp mode without warning. Avoid driving if the gear indication changes unexpectedly or the transmission loses drive, and address the fault promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
