OBD-II fault code

P08AE: Neutral Position Sensor B Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The neutral position sensor B reports a circuit range/performance fault. Verification of true neutral position on the B channel is impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Neutral position sensor B provides a signal that helps the control module verify when the transmission is in neutral. This code sets when the B-channel signal is outside its expected range or does not match the expected response across selector positions, rather than when the circuit is simply open.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and monitor live neutral sensor B status while moving the selector through its positions, checking specifically whether neutral is recognized.
  2. Inspect sensor B’s mounting, connector, and harness for looseness, corrosion, damage, or misalignment that could make its reading inaccurate.
  3. Use the vehicle wiring diagram to check the B-channel supply, ground, and signal for opens, shorts, or poor connections.
  4. Measure sensor B output in neutral and other selector positions and compare the results with the manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If wiring is sound, check the sensor’s alignment or wear and replace it if its response remains outside the specified range.

Common fixes

  • Secure the sensor B connector and repair damaged or corroded B-channel wiring.
  • Correct sensor B mounting or alignment if it is preventing accurate position detection.
  • Replace neutral position sensor B if its output falls outside the manufacturer’s specification.
  • Clear the code and confirm the B channel identifies neutral and changes appropriately with selector movement.

Can I keep driving?

Because a range or performance fault can make the transmission misread neutral and trigger limp mode, avoid driving if gear status or shifts are unreliable. Stop if the vehicle selects gears unexpectedly or cannot hold a predictable gear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
