What it means
The neutral position sensor B reports a circuit/open fault. Verification of true neutral position on the B channel is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Neutral position sensor B provides a separate indication used by the control module to verify that the transmission is in neutral. This code sets when the B-channel circuit is detected as open, so the module cannot reliably use that channel to confirm neutral.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring fault
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare live neutral sensor B status with the actual selector position, especially when the transmission is in neutral.
- Inspect sensor B’s connector for a loose plug, corrosion, damaged wiring, or a terminal pushed back into the connector body.
- Trace the B-channel wiring using the vehicle diagram and check for an open between the sensor and control module.
- Check the B-channel supply and ground as specified by the manufacturer to distinguish a wiring open from a failed sensor.
- If the circuit is intact, test neutral sensor B’s output in neutral and the other selector positions against the manufacturer’s specification.
Common fixes
- Reseat the neutral sensor B connector and secure loose harness routing.
- Repair an open B-channel wire or replace a pushed-back or damaged terminal.
- Replace neutral position sensor B if its output is absent despite a sound circuit.
- Clear the code and verify that the B channel correctly identifies neutral.
Can I keep driving?
The transmission may misidentify neutral or enter limp mode, so do not rely on the vehicle to confirm its gear position. Avoid driving if gear selection is uncertain, and stop if it shifts unexpectedly or cannot select a gear safely.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
