OBD-II fault code

P08B1: Neutral Position Sensor B Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The neutral position sensor B reports a circuit intermittent/erratic fault. Verification of true neutral position on the B channel is impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Neutral position sensor B reports transmission position to the control module so it can verify neutral. This code sets when the B-channel signal changes erratically or drops in and out instead of remaining consistent with the selected position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and transmission live data for when the B-channel signal became erratic and whether the fault coincided with a shift or vibration.
  2. Inspect sensor B’s connector, terminals, and harness for looseness, corrosion, chafing, or movement that could interrupt contact.
  3. With live data displayed, gently move the harness and connector while the vehicle is safely stationary to check for signal dropouts.
  4. Check the B-channel power, ground, and signal circuit continuity and connections against the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If the harness remains stable, test sensor B through its operating range using the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose connector or repair a terminal with intermittent contact.
  • Repair chafed or broken wiring in the sensor B circuit.
  • Replace a faulty neutral position sensor B.
  • Perform any required neutral-position relearn after repair.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the fault causes missed or harsh shifts, slipping, or limp mode; an intermittent signal can return without warning and disrupt transmission control. Have it checked promptly, especially before a long trip.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
