OBD-II fault code

P086D: Neutral Position Sensor A Circuit High

What it means

The neutral position sensor A reports a circuit high fault. Verification of true neutral position is impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Neutral position sensor A reports transmission position to the TCM for neutral verification. P086D sets when the sensor A circuit signal is above its calibrated range, which can result from a short to voltage, a poor circuit connection, or a sensor fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and monitor sensor A’s live signal while selecting ranges to confirm that it remains higher than expected.
  2. Inspect sensor A’s connector and harness for damaged insulation, moisture, loose terminals, or contact with a power wire.
  3. Check the circuit for a short to voltage and verify its power, ground, and signal paths using the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s procedure.
  4. Check terminal fit and voltage drop at suspect connections to find resistance or intermittent contact affecting the signal.
  5. If the circuit checks out, test neutral position sensor A against the manufacturer’s specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair wiring shorted to voltage or damaged near the transmission.
  • Restore loose, corroded, or poorly seated connector terminals.
  • Repair a faulty sensor circuit connection or ground identified during testing.
  • Replace neutral position sensor A if its output remains above specification.

Can I keep driving?

The TCM may not reliably recognize neutral and could limit shifting. Avoid driving if the selected range is misreported, shifting is unpredictable, or the vehicle moves unexpectedly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
