What it means
The neutral position sensor A reports a not learned fault. Verification of true neutral position is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Neutral position sensor A must be learned or calibrated so the TCM can interpret its signal correctly when verifying neutral. P086F sets when the module does not have the required learned value, such as after adaptation loss or sensor replacement without the prescribed learn procedure.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Adaptation lost after battery disconnect
- Sensor replaced without learn procedure
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check the TCM’s sensor A learned or adaptation status with a scan tool that supports transmission data.
- Ask whether the battery was disconnected, the TCM was reset, or sensor A was replaced shortly before the code appeared.
- Check live sensor A position data and confirm the selector reaches and reports each range consistently.
- Inspect sensor A’s connector and wiring for faults that would prevent a successful learn.
- If the circuit and position readings are sound, perform the manufacturer’s sensor A learn procedure with a compatible scan tool.
Common fixes
- Perform the manufacturer’s neutral position sensor A learn procedure after adaptation loss.
- Correct wiring or connector faults that interfere with the sensor signal.
- Adjust or replace sensor A if it cannot provide consistent position data during the learn procedure.
Can I keep driving?
The TCM may restrict shifting or fail to confirm neutral until the sensor is learned. Avoid driving if the gear position is uncertain or shifts are abnormal, and have the required calibration completed before relying on normal operation.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
