OBD-II fault code

P086C: Neutral Position Sensor A Circuit Low

What it means

The neutral position sensor A reports a circuit low fault. Verification of true neutral position is impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Neutral position sensor A sends an electrical signal that lets the TCM verify the transmission’s neutral position. P086C sets when the sensor A circuit voltage is detected below the calibrated range, which can result from a short to ground, a sensor fault, or excessive resistance at a connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check sensor A’s live signal while selecting neutral and other ranges to confirm that the signal stays abnormally low.
  2. Inspect sensor A’s connector and wiring for corrosion, damaged insulation, a short to ground, or a loose terminal.
  3. Check the circuit’s power and ground connections and measure the signal path using the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s procedure.
  4. Check connector pin fit and voltage drop across suspect connections, since high contact resistance can pull the signal below range.
  5. If wiring and connections meet specification, test neutral position sensor A and replace it if its output is still low.

Common fixes

  • Clean or replace corroded terminals and restore a sound connection.
  • Repair wiring shorted to ground or otherwise damaged in the sensor A circuit.
  • Correct a poor power or ground connection identified by testing.
  • Replace neutral position sensor A if it fails the specified output test.

Can I keep driving?

The TCM may misread neutral and restrict shifting, so avoid driving if the indicated range is unreliable or the vehicle shifts unexpectedly. Stop if it loses drive or behaves unpredictably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
