What it means
The neutral position sensor A reports a range/performance fault. Verification of true neutral position is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Neutral position sensor A provides the TCM with information used to verify that the transmission is in neutral. P086B sets when the sensor’s signal is present but falls outside the expected range or does not track position as calibrated, rather than appearing as a completely open circuit.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring fault
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and watch sensor A’s live position signal while moving the selector through each range to find where it becomes implausible.
- Inspect sensor A’s connector and wiring for looseness, damage, corrosion, or poor routing that could distort the signal.
- Check that the transmission selector and linkage move fully into each detent and that the displayed position agrees with the selected range.
- Test the sensor signal and circuit operation using the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
- If the circuit and linkage check out, test sensor A for an aged or out-of-calibration response and perform any required adjustment or learn procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged wiring or connector contact at sensor A.
- Correct selector linkage or adjustment issues that keep the transmission from reaching the expected position.
- Replace sensor A if its signal remains outside the specified range.
- Complete the manufacturer’s calibration or learn procedure if required after repair.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if the displayed gear does not match the selector or shifts become erratic, because the TCM may misidentify neutral and limit operation. Do not rely on the transmission being in neutral unless its position is confirmed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
