OBD-II fault code

P063D: Generator Voltage Sense Circuit A High

What it means

The control module monitors generator voltage sense circuit A and sets this code when the sensed voltage is higher than the expected range. The code identifies a high sense-circuit reading; it does not by itself establish that generator output voltage is high.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Generator voltage sense circuit A carries the battery-side voltage reading used by the charging regulator or control module to manage generator output. P063D sets when the voltage reported on this sense circuit is above the expected range. A high sense reading identifies the circuit signal and does not by itself prove that generator output voltage is too high.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sense line shorted to supply
  2. Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold
  3. Ground point with elevated resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare circuit A’s live sense reading with battery-terminal and generator output readings under the same conditions.
  2. Inspect circuit A wiring for a short to a power supply, including pinched sections and damaged insulation near battery or generator feeds.
  3. Check the sense connector and grounds for corrosion, looseness, or wiring repairs that could bridge the circuit to supply.
  4. With the circuit isolated as directed by the manufacturer, test for an unintended supply connection and check the sense wire and ground path.
  5. If wiring passes, test the generator regulator’s sense input and charging response according to the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair circuit A wiring that is shorted to a supply source.
  • Replace a damaged connector terminal or restore a compromised connector seal.
  • Correct a poor ground or wiring repair that is biasing the sense reading high.
  • Repair or replace the regulator or generator if its sense input fails testing.

Can I keep driving?

A falsely high sense reading can lead to incorrect charging decisions, while a genuine charging fault may risk damage to the battery or electrical components. If the charging warning appears, the battery becomes hot, or lights behave unusually, stop driving and have the charging system checked.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
