OBD-II fault code

P063B: Generator Voltage Sense Circuit A Range or Performance

What it means

Same as P063A with the sense voltage in plausible range yet not matching the alternator output - high contact resistance or wrong calibration.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Generator voltage sense circuit A lets the charging regulator or control module monitor battery-side voltage and regulate charging output. P063B sets when the sense reading is plausible but does not track generator output as expected, often because resistance in a connection distorts the reading. The code does not alone establish that the battery or generator voltage is out of range.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Contact resistance high
  2. Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold
  3. Ground point with elevated resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare live circuit A sense voltage with generator output and battery voltage under matching conditions.
  2. Inspect circuit A terminals, grounds, and battery and generator connections for corrosion, looseness, or heat damage that could add resistance.
  3. Check the battery condition and charging-system belt or drive components if fitted, since unstable generator output can make the comparison misleading.
  4. Measure voltage drop through the sense wire and its ground path while the system is operating, using the manufacturer’s test conditions.
  5. If the wiring readings are sound but sense voltage remains mismatched, test the generator regulator and calibration requirements specified for the vehicle.

Common fixes

  • Clean and tighten high-resistance terminals in generator sense circuit A.
  • Repair a damaged sense wire or ground connection causing voltage drop.
  • Correct charging-system drive or connection problems that cause unstable generator output.
  • Repair or replace the regulator or generator if its sense response fails manufacturer testing.

Can I keep driving?

A mismatch may cause improper charging, which can drain the battery or shorten battery life. Limit driving if the charging warning is on or voltage-related symptoms appear, and avoid relying on the vehicle for a long trip until the readings are checked.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
