OBD-II fault code

P063A: Generator Voltage Sense Circuit A

What it means

A general circuit fault is detected on the alternator voltage sense line A - the line over which the regulator measures battery-side voltage to set charging output.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Generator voltage sense circuit A lets the charging regulator or control module monitor battery-side voltage so charging output can be managed. P063A sets when the module detects a general fault in this sense circuit, such as an open or otherwise invalid circuit condition; it does not by itself confirm that alternator output is low or high.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in sense line
  2. Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold
  3. Ground point with elevated resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan charging-system values and related battery or generator codes before clearing the fault.
  2. Inspect the generator sense circuit A wire and connectors for an open, loose contact, corrosion, or damage, and check the associated ground points.
  3. Check battery condition and charging-system connections, then compare battery-side voltage with the scan-tool sense reading under the same operating conditions.
  4. Using the manufacturer’s wiring diagram, test circuit A for continuity and unwanted opens or shorts, including voltage drop across suspect connections.
  5. If wiring and grounds pass, test the generator regulator and sense input according to manufacturer procedures.

Common fixes

  • Secure or clean a loose or corroded generator sense circuit A connection.
  • Repair an open or damaged section of the sense wire.
  • Restore a poor ground or high-resistance connection in the charging circuit.
  • Repair or replace the generator regulator or assembly if testing confirms an internal sense-input fault.

Can I keep driving?

If the charging warning appears, the battery may gradually discharge and the vehicle could stall or fail to restart, so avoid unnecessary trips and switch off nonessential electrical loads. Have the charging system checked promptly, especially before driving far.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
