OBD-II fault code

P063C: Generator Voltage Sense Circuit A Low

What it means

The control module monitors generator voltage sense circuit A and sets this code when the sensed voltage is lower than the expected range. The code identifies a low sense-circuit reading; it does not by itself establish that generator output voltage is low.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Generator voltage sense circuit A carries the battery-side voltage reading used by the charging regulator or control module to manage generator output. P063C sets when the voltage reported on this sense circuit is below the expected range. A low sense reading points to the circuit signal and does not by itself prove that generator output voltage is low.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sense line shorted to ground
  2. Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold
  3. Ground point with elevated resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare circuit A’s live sense reading with battery-terminal and generator output readings under the same conditions.
  2. Inspect the circuit A wire and connectors for a short to ground, rubbed-through insulation, corrosion, or a loose terminal.
  3. Check battery and generator connections and grounds for damage, then verify battery condition so a weak battery does not confuse the comparison.
  4. With the circuit isolated as directed by the manufacturer, test for a short to ground and check continuity and voltage drop in the sense wire.
  5. If circuit wiring passes, test the generator regulator’s sense input and charging response according to the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed circuit A wiring that is shorted to ground.
  • Clean or replace a corroded or damaged sense-circuit connector terminal.
  • Restore a poor charging-system ground or connection.
  • Repair or replace the regulator or generator if its sense input fails testing.

Can I keep driving?

The low sense reading may lead to incorrect charging and a discharged battery, even if generator output initially appears normal. Avoid long trips and heavy electrical loads if the charging warning is present, and stop if the vehicle begins losing electrical power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
