What it means
The control circuit of camshaft profile actuator B (intake side) on bank 1 reports a control circuit low condition. Cam profile B (high-lift or VTEC-style) cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Camshaft Profile Actuator B on Bank 1 controls the intake cam's alternate profile, such as a higher-lift mode. This code sets when the actuator control circuit voltage is below its expected range, consistent with a short to ground or an internally shorted actuator coil.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control wire shorted to ground
- Internal short in actuator coil
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and related camshaft codes to see when the Bank 1 intake profile actuator circuit fault occurred.
- Inspect the Bank 1 intake-side Profile Actuator B connector and harness for rubbed-through insulation, corrosion, moisture, or loose pins.
- Trace the control wire for a short to ground, especially where the Bank 1 actuator harness passes near brackets or other wiring.
- Test the actuator circuit for a ground short and check connector continuity using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the wiring checks out, test the actuator coil against the manufacturer's specification for an internal short.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose Bank 1 actuator connector terminals.
- Repair the control wire shorted to ground.
- Replace Bank 1 intake Profile Actuator B if its coil is internally shorted.
- Repair damaged wiring or connector pins in the actuator circuit.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and high engine speeds because the Bank 1 intake cam profile may not change as intended, causing power loss or rough running. If the engine stalls, runs very roughly, or enters reduced-power mode, stop driving until the circuit is repaired.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
