OBD-II fault code

C0649: Brake Pressure Sensor M Circuit/Open

What it means

The module monitors the electrical circuit for brake pressure sensor M. It sets this code when it detects an open circuit or loss of the sensor’s electrical connection.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Brake pressure sensor M reports hydraulic pressure to the brake control module for ABS and stability functions. The module sets C0649 when it loses the electrical connection to sensor M, for example from a broken wire, a backed-out connector pin, or an internal connection failure.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wire broken
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live data for sensor M, noting whether its reading is missing while other brake pressure readings remain available.
  2. Inspect sensor M's connector for a pushed-back pin, loose fit, corrosion, or damage, and check its harness for a break.
  3. With the wiring diagram, check continuity through sensor M's signal path and its connections to the module.
  4. Check the sensor's supply and ground circuits against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a lost feed from an open signal wire.
  5. If the wiring and connections test correctly, inspect sensor M and the module for an internal connection fault before replacing either part.

Common fixes

  • Repair a broken wire in sensor M's circuit.
  • Seat or replace a backed-out or damaged connector terminal.
  • Repair a cracked solder joint or other confirmed internal connection fault.
  • Replace sensor M if its internal circuit is confirmed open.

Can I keep driving?

Drive cautiously only as far as needed for repair; ABS and stability control may be unavailable, and brake assist may be reduced. Avoid hard braking and slippery roads, and stop if pedal feel or braking changes.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
