OBD-II fault code

C0646: Brake Pressure Sensor L Circuit High

What it means

Brake pressure sensor L signal voltage above expected range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Brake pressure sensor L sends a pressure signal to the brake control module for ABS and stability control decisions. C0646 means the module sees sensor L's signal above its expected range, which can result from a signal wire shorted to battery voltage or a poor, corroded connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to battery
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and watch sensor L's live signal with the code active to confirm it is high and compare it with other pressure readings.
  2. Inspect sensor L's connector and harness for corrosion, moisture, chafing, pinched wires, and terminals pushed out of position.
  3. Wiggle the sensor L harness while monitoring live data to see whether movement changes the high signal.
  4. Using the wiring diagram, check whether the signal wire is shorted to battery voltage and inspect the supply wire for contact with a B+ source.
  5. Check sensor L's supply, ground, and signal circuits against the manufacturer's specification; if wiring is sound, test the sensor and module.

Common fixes

  • Clean and repair corroded connector terminals or restore a sound terminal fit.
  • Repair chafed or pinched wiring that shorts sensor L's signal to battery voltage.
  • Repair damaged connector seals and wiring exposed to moisture.
  • Replace sensor L or repair the module only if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and leave extra stopping distance because ABS and stability control may be disabled, with possible reduced brake assist. Avoid high speeds and poor road conditions, and stop if braking feel changes.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
