Red lights

Airbag / SRS warning

What it means

The supplemental restraint system (SRS), which can include airbags and seat-belt pretensioners, has detected a fault or is not ready. Red usually signals a serious safety fault; the colour and exact behaviour vary by manufacturer.

What the symbol looks like: A seated person in front of a large circle representing an airbag.

Why it comes on

  • A fault in an airbag or seat-belt pretensioner circuit.
  • A faulty crash sensor or occupant-classification sensor.
  • A loose or damaged electrical connection.
  • A weak battery or power-supply interruption.

What to do

  1. Check the owner’s manual for the warning’s exact meaning.
  2. Make sure occupants are seated and belted correctly.
  3. Arrange a prompt inspection by a qualified repairer with SRS-capable diagnostic equipment.
  4. Do not probe, disconnect, or repair airbag wiring yourself.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may remain driveable, but airbags or pretensioners may not work correctly in a crash. Arrange prompt repair and drive with extra care; do not assume the restraint system will protect you normally.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
