OBD-II fault code

B0001: Driver Frontal Stage 1 Deployment Control

What it means

The restraint control module detected a fault in the driver frontal airbag stage 1 deployment control circuit. The airbag may not deploy as intended in a crash.

How it works

The restraint control module monitors the driver frontal airbag's stage 1 deployment control circuit, which connects through the steering-column clock spring so the circuit can function as the wheel turns. B0001 sets when the module detects a fault in that circuit; the driver airbag may not deploy as intended in a crash.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Clock spring (spiral cable) damaged in steering column
  2. Loose or corroded airbag connector under steering wheel
  3. SRS control module internal fault

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Use an SRS-capable scan tool to read B0001's accompanying fault details and freeze-frame information before disturbing any restraint wiring.
  2. With the vehicle secured and the manufacturer's SRS disabling and waiting procedure followed, inspect the steering-column area and accessible connectors for damage or poor connection.
  3. Check the clock spring and its connections using the vehicle's prescribed SRS diagnostic procedure, since steering-wheel movement must not compromise the stage 1 circuit.
  4. If the clock spring and wiring pass inspection, test the driver stage 1 deployment circuit for the indicated open, short, or connection fault using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. Consider an internal restraint-control-module fault only after the driver airbag circuit and clock spring have been checked.

Common fixes

  • Repair a confirmed poor connection in the driver stage 1 deployment circuit using the prescribed SRS procedure.
  • Replace a damaged clock spring after confirming it is the source of the fault.
  • Repair damaged driver airbag circuit wiring according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Replace a restraint control module only if circuit checks confirm an internal module fault.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may be drivable, but the driver frontal airbag may not work as intended in a crash. Arrange prompt SRS repair and do not probe or handle airbag connectors unless following the manufacturer's disabling procedure.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
