OBD-II fault code

B0020: Left Side Deployment Control (Subfault)

What it means

This code identifies a fault associated with the left side airbag deployment control. The restraint control module sets it when it detects a problem in that deployment control; the exact fault is specified by accompanying subfault information.

How it works

The left-side airbag deployment system protects the driver’s side of the cabin, and its squib circuit is monitored by the restraint control module. B0020 flags a fault in that deployment control, but the code alone does not say whether the problem is an open, short, or another circuit condition; read the accompanying subfault details.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Seat harness connector under driver seat damaged
  2. Side airbag squib circuit open
  3. SRS control module fault

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Read the SRS code details and freeze-frame information with a scan tool that can access the restraint control module, noting the specific subfault and whether it recurs.
  2. With the SRS disabled by the manufacturer’s procedure, inspect the driver-seat harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose fit, or signs of seat-rail pinching.
  3. Trace the left-side deployment wiring for an open or short and inspect the terminals at both the side airbag and restraint control module.
  4. Use the manufacturer-approved diagnostic method to test the circuit and connector; do not probe the squib directly with an ordinary meter or test light.
  5. If the harness passes the specified checks, use the SRS diagnostic tree to distinguish a faulty side airbag module from a restraint control module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed or pinched driver-seat harness wiring using the approved SRS repair method.
  • Correct a loose or damaged seat-harness connector after disabling the SRS as specified.
  • Repair an open or short in the left-side squib circuit identified by the subfault tests.
  • Replace the side airbag module or restraint control module only after the specified tests confirm the component fault.

Can I keep driving?

The driver-side airbag may not deploy as intended while the SRS warning is on. Drive cautiously only as needed to arrange prompt diagnosis, and avoid moving or working around the seat wiring.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
