What it means
The SRS module has detected a fault in the deployment control circuit for the left side (driver) airbag stage 1. Side impact protection on the driver side may be reduced.
How it works
The driver-side airbag has a first deployment stage, and the restraint control module monitors that stage’s squib circuit. It sets B0021 when it detects a fault in the left-side stage 1 deployment control, so the first-stage side-impact protection may be compromised.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Loose airbag connector under driver seat
- Wiring pinched in seat rail
- Side airbag module internal fault
Symptoms
- Airbag warning light on
How to diagnose it
- Retrieve the SRS subfault and freeze-frame data with a restraint-capable scan tool to confirm the fault is specifically in left-side stage 1.
- Disable the SRS according to the manufacturer’s procedure, then inspect the connector beneath the driver seat and the harness where the seat rails move.
- Look for a loose terminal, corrosion, or wire pinching that could interrupt the stage 1 circuit; note any change in seat position associated with an intermittent fault.
- Check circuit continuity and shorts only by the manufacturer’s approved SRS procedure, without directly probing the airbag inflator.
- If wiring and connectors pass, follow the service diagnostic steps to test the driver-side airbag module and restraint control module.
Common fixes
- Free and repair wiring pinched in the driver-seat rail using the approved SRS repair procedure.
- Reseat or replace a damaged under-seat connector after the specified SRS disable steps.
- Repair an identified open or short in the left-side stage 1 circuit.
- Replace the driver-side airbag module or restraint control module only if the manufacturer’s tests isolate the fault there.
Can I keep driving?
The driver-side airbag’s first stage may not be available in a side impact while this fault is present. Have the SRS diagnosed promptly, and avoid adjusting or servicing the driver seat harness.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
