OBD-II fault code

B0002: Driver Frontal Stage 2 Deployment Control

What it means

The restraint control module detected a fault in the driver frontal airbag stage 2 deployment control circuit. The airbag may not deploy as intended in a crash.

How it works

The driver’s frontal airbag uses a second deployment stage, controlled through a dedicated circuit monitored by the restraint control module. B0002 sets when that module detects a fault in the stage 2 control circuit, so the driver’s airbag may not deploy as designed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Clock spring damaged or worn
  2. Stage 2 squib circuit open or shorted
  3. SRS control module fault

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Use an SRS-capable scan tool to read B0002’s subfault and freeze-frame data, which can narrow down the stage 2 circuit condition.
  2. With the manufacturer’s safeing procedure followed, inspect the clock spring and driver airbag stage 2 connectors and wiring for damage, looseness, or corrosion.
  3. Check the stage 2 circuit for an open, short, or poor connection using the manufacturer’s specified SRS test procedure.
  4. If the clock spring and wiring pass, test the driver airbag module and restraint control module according to manufacturer procedures.
  5. After repair, clear the SRS code and confirm with a scan that B0002 does not return.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or corroded stage 2 connector using the approved SRS procedure.
  • Repair damaged stage 2 wiring or replace a faulty clock spring.
  • Replace the driver airbag module if its stage 2 circuit fails the specified test.
  • Replace or reprogram the restraint control module if it is confirmed faulty.

Can I keep driving?

The airbag warning light means the driver’s airbag protection may be reduced, including its second stage. Arrange prompt diagnosis and avoid unnecessary driving; the engine may run normally, but crash protection could be compromised.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
