What is the Volkswagen Jetta?
The Jetta is a compact four-door saloon, called a sedan in North America. Volkswagen introduced it as a Golf-based car with a conventional boot, for drivers who preferred a separate luggage compartment to a hatchback. The model became an international name, though in parts of Europe some generations were known as the Vento or Bora.
The Jetta developed a more distinct identity over time. Volkswagen described the sixth generation, introduced in 2010, as having a design separate from the Golf. The A7 generation appears in US and Canadian listings from 2019 onward.
Jetta generations
The listed generations are A2 (1984–1992), A3 (1993–1999), A4 (1999–2005), A5 (2005–2010), A6 (2010–2018) and A7 (2019–today). Names varied by market: the third generation was called Vento in Europe and the fourth Bora, while Jetta remained the name in North America.
Volkswagen introduced the Jetta in 1979 as a Golf-based saloon. Through later generations, it appeared under different names in some markets and grew into a model with a strong presence in North America as well as a history in Europe.
Jetta engines and fuel consumption
In the EU, listed engines range from 1.2 to 2.0 litres, with power from 77 kW (105 PS) to 165 kW (224 PS); fuel categories include petrol, diesel, hybrid and other. The UK range lists 1.4- to 2.0-litre engines and power up to 147 kW (200 PS). US and Canadian listings cover 1.4- to 2.8-litre engines.
The lowest listed UK consumption is 4 L/100 km on NEDC; France’s lowest is 4.1 L/100 km on NEDC. The US EPA listing gives 5.3 L/100 km and a best combined rating of 44 MPG. Canada’s lowest listing is 5.3 L/100 km on the NRCan 5-cycle test. WLTP and NEDC are European procedures; the EPA uses its own test in the US, and Canada uses a 5-cycle procedure, so results across these markets are not directly comparable.
Where was the Jetta sold?
The Jetta appears in EU, UK, French, US and Canadian figures. EU registrations span 2010–2025 and total 201,667. The US and Canadian listings reach further back, while the A7 generation appears in those two markets from 2019 onward. In parts of Europe, the car also carried names such as Vento and Bora.
