    Defect
VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 JETTA VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM MARCH 2010 THROUGH MARCH 2011. THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE AN ELECTRICAL WIRING AND FUSE LAYOUT WHERE THE CONVERTER BOX IS PROTECTED BY THE SAME FUSE USED BY THE SIGNAL HORN AND THE ANTI-THEFT ALARM SYSTEM. SHOULD THAT FUSE BE BLOWN, THE CONVERTER BOX WILL BE DISCONNECTED FROM THE POWER SUPPLY WHICH, IN TURN, WILL SHUT OFF APPLICATIONS SUCH AS THE ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM, LIGHTING SYSTEM, AND WIPERS.
    Consequence
SHOULD THIS HAPPEN WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN, THE ENGINE COULD STALL, OR THE HEADLIGHTS OR WIPERS COULD TURN OFF UNEXPECTEDLY, POTENTIALLY LEADING TO A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
    Remedy
VOLKSWAGEN WILL NOTIFY OWNERS WHEN SUFFICIENT QUANTITIES OF REPAIRS KITS ARE AVAILABLE. 81. Brake booster halves may separate

Reported August 29, 1988Model years 1988NHTSA campaign 88V1440001,700 vehicles affected

The brake booster halves may separate under heavy braking, suddenly reducing braking power and potentially causing a crash. Brake boosters will be replaced as necessary.

    Official NHTSA recall text
    Component
    SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM
    Defect
BRAKE BOOSTERS HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY ASSEMBLED WITH THE TWO HALVES OF THE BOOSTER UNIT INSUFFICIENTLY CONNECTED.
    Consequence
BRAKE BOOSTER HALVES COULD SEPARATE UNDER HEAVY BRAKEAPPLICATION AND BRAKING POWER WOULD SUDDENLY DIMINISH WHICH COULD RESULT IN ANACCIDENT.
    Remedy
    REPLACE BRAKE BOOSTERS AS NECESSARY.

  83. Cruise control resume function may be unmarked

Reported November 16, 1987Model years 1988NHTSA campaign 87V1750001,900 vehicles affected

The cruise control switch may not be marked with “RES” for the resume function, so the vehicle does not meet the stated safety standard. Part of the cruise switch will be replaced.

    Official NHTSA recall text
    Component
    VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
    Defect
CERTAIN VEHICLES MAY NOT BE MARKED WITH LETTERS RES TO IDENTIFY THE RESUME FUNCTION AS REQUIRED BY FMVSS 101.
    Consequence
VEHICLES DO NOT COMPLY WITH FMVSS 101.
    Remedy
REPLACE PART OF CRUISE SWITCH PORTION.

  84. Fuel pump may seize and interrupt fuel supply

Reported April 14, 1987Model years 1985–1987NHTSA campaign 87V053000278,520 vehicles affected

At high ambient temperatures, a fine-mesh fuel filter may restrict fuel flow and cause the in-tank fuel pump to seize. The interrupted fuel supply could stall the engine. Install a modified fuel pump and filter.

    Official NHTSA recall text
    Component
    FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
    Defect
FUEL PUMP, LOCATED INSIDE FUEL TANK, COULD SEIZE DURING HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES BECAUSE OF AN EXTREME FINE MESH FUEL FILTER RESTRICTING THE FUEL FLOW.
    Consequence
FUEL SUPPLY TO ENGINE WOULD BE PARTIALLY INTERRUPTED,RESULTING IN STALLING.
    Remedy
INSTALL A MODIFIED FUEL PUMP AND FILTER.
    Notes
SYSTEM: FUEL PUMP.VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER CARS EQUIPPED WITH A DUAL FUEL PUMP SYSTEM.
  85. Brake hoses may crack and leak

Reported July 30, 1985Model years 1983–1984NHTSA campaign 85V099000105,000 vehicles affected

In adverse weather, the outer layer of brake hoses may become brittle and crack, causing brake fluid loss, longer stopping distances and possibly a crash. Brake hoses will be replaced as necessary.

    Official NHTSA recall text
    Component
    SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
    Defect
UNDER ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS, OUTER RUBBER LAYER OF BRAKE HOSES MAY BECOME BRITTLE AND DEVELOP CRACKS. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: CRACKS COULD LEAD TO LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID RESULTING IN AN INCREASE IN STOPPING DISTANCE AND POSSIBLY AN ACCIDENT.
    Remedy
    REPLACE BRAKE HOSES AS NECESSARY.
