What is the Mazda3?

The Mazda3 is a compact car offered as a hatchback and a sedan. The hatchback has a large rear opening, while the sedan has a conventional boot. It is one of Mazda’s core passenger cars, between the smaller Mazda2 and the brand’s SUVs. First launched as the Axela in Japan, the Mazda3 later brought Mazda’s Skyactiv engineering and Kodo design to the compact class. The current generation uses Mazda’s Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture.

Mazda3 generations

The first generation ran from 2004–2009, followed by the second in 2010–2013 and the third in 2014–2018. The fourth generation began in 2019 and continues in the listed figures. Across these generations, the Mazda3 kept its compact-car role while its styling and engineering evolved. Mazda gives the hatchback and sedan distinct design characters.

Engines, power and economy

EU versions span 1.5 L to 2.5 L engines, with power from 74 kW (101 PS) to 191 kW (260 PS). Listed fuel types include petrol, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, LPG and other. The UK range covers 1.3 L to 2.5 L and 74 kW (100 PS) to 186 kW (253 PS); French listings include petrol and diesel cars from 74 kW (101 PS) to 191 kW (260 PS). In the United States and Canada, listed engines are 2.0 L to 2.5 L petrol.

The lowest conventional EU consumption listed is 4.9 L/100 km under WLTP. The plug-in hybrid’s official weighted figure is 6 L/100 km WLTP and assumes some driving is electric. The UK and France minima are 3.8 and 3.9 L/100 km respectively under NEDC. The EPA’s lowest figure is 7.1 L/100 km, with 33 MPG combined as the best rating; Canada’s NRCan 5-cycle minimum is 6.9 L/100 km. WLTP and NEDC procedures in Europe differ from the EPA test in the US and the 5-cycle test in Canada, so the figures are not directly comparable.
