What is the Chevrolet Trax?

The Chevrolet Trax is a small crossover SUV, with a raised driving position and a practical cabin in a compact package. It sits among the smaller vehicles in Chevrolet’s range and suits everyday city driving as well as trips with passengers or luggage.

The first generation, known as U200 and based on GM’s Gamma II architecture, was sold in Europe, the UK, France and Canada from 2013, and in the US from 2015. The second generation arrived in the US and Canada for 2024. Chevrolet described the redesigned Trax as combining compact-car practicality with SUV utility; its lower, longer shape gave it a more car-like profile.

Generations, engines and power

The first-generation Trax ran through 2021 in Europe, the UK, France and Canada, and through 2022 in the US. European versions used petrol and diesel engines from 1.4 to 1.7 litres, with EU power figures from 85 kW (116 PS) to 103 kW (140 PS). UK figures start at 85 kW (115 PS). The most registered EU configuration was the 1.7-litre diesel rated at 96 kW (131 PS); a 1.4-litre petrol rated at 103 kW (140 PS) was also among the leading versions.

The second generation is listed in the US and Canada from 2024. North American Trax listings cover 1.2- to 1.4-litre engines, with US versions also listed as flex-fuel E85.

How economical is the Chevrolet Trax?

The lowest listed UK and French figure is 4.5 L/100 km on the NEDC test. In the US, the lowest listed figure is 7.8 L/100 km under the EPA procedure, with a best combined rating of 30 MPG. Canada’s lowest listed figure is 7.9 L/100 km on the NRCan 5-cycle test. These results use different procedures: NEDC in Europe, EPA in the US and 5-cycle in Canada, so they are not directly comparable.

Official EU registration figures cover 2013–2016 and record 53,154 Trax registrations. The leading configuration was the 1.7-litre diesel, followed by the 1.4-litre petrol.
