OBD-II fault code

P2E35: Battery Charger B Enable Circuit/Open

What it means

Battery charger B reports a enable circuit/open condition. HV charging operation may be impaired. The on-board charger negotiates voltage, current and safety with the EVSE; a fault interrupts charging or limits it to AC slow-charge despite a DC fast charger being attached.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Charger B's enable circuit signals whether the charger is permitted to operate. P2E35 sets when the control module detects an open or missing enable signal, which can keep charger B from starting or interrupt charging; the code alone does not establish which charging mode or external charger is affected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in enable wire
  2. Enable switch failed
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame and charger B live data to confirm the enable status when the fault occurred and whether it is currently open.
  2. Inspect charger B's enable wire and connector for a break, loose connection, corrosion, or a terminal pushed back into the connector body.
  3. Check any enable switch or interlock associated with charger B for correct operation according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Test continuity and signal behavior across the enable circuit using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specification.
  5. If the circuit and switch test correctly, follow the manufacturer's steps to check the charger B module's enable input.

Common fixes

  • Reseat or repair a pushed-back or loose enable terminal.
  • Repair an open or damaged charger B enable wire.
  • Replace a failed enable switch or interlock if testing confirms it is faulty.
  • Repair or replace the charger B module only if its input is confirmed faulty.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may fail to start or may stop, so check the vehicle's displayed charging status and available range before driving. If a high-voltage warning appears, stop charging and follow the vehicle's safety instructions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
