What it means
The control module detects that the battery charger enable circuit is operating outside its expected range or performance. The effect on charging depends on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery charger enable circuit communicates whether charging is permitted, and the control module checks that its signal behaves within an expected range. P0E64 sets when the signal is out of range or inconsistent, which can make charging fail to start, interrupt, or proceed more slowly.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Connector not seated
- Noisy ground reference
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and watch the charger enable signal during a charging attempt for unstable or implausible readings.
- With the vehicle safely powered down, check that the enable-circuit connector is fully seated and its pins are clean and undamaged.
- Inspect the enable wiring and ground reference for damage, loose connections, or contamination that could create a noisy signal.
- Following the service procedure, gently check for signal changes when the connector and harness are moved, keeping clear of high-voltage parts.
- Measure the enable circuit and ground reference against the manufacturer’s specification to isolate a signal or ground problem.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure the enable-circuit connector.
- Clean or repair connector contacts with poor or intermittent contact.
- Repair damaged enable wiring or the affected ground connection.
- Replace a failed component only after circuit measurements identify it.
Can I keep driving?
Charging may be unreliable, so verify that the vehicle reaches the charge level you need before relying on it for a trip. Stop and follow the vehicle’s safety guidance if a high-voltage warning or reduced power occurs.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
