What it means
The control module detects an open or interrupted battery charger enable circuit. The effect on charging depends on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery charger enable circuit carries the signal that permits the charger to operate. The control module sets this code when the circuit is open or interrupted, so charging may not start or may stop depending on how the vehicle uses the enable signal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in enable wire
- Enable switch failed
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check charger status and enable-command data to see whether the circuit was interrupted before or during charging.
- Inspect the enable switch, its connector, and accessible wiring for damage, loose pins, or a terminal pushed back into the connector body.
- Check the enable wire for an open circuit and verify connector continuity using the manufacturer’s wiring information.
- Test the enable switch or control input to confirm it changes state as intended.
- Repair the fault, clear the code, and confirm the charger starts and continues charging normally.
Common fixes
- Reseat the enable circuit connector and secure its terminals.
- Repair an open or damaged enable wire.
- Replace a failed enable switch.
- Restore a pushed-back or damaged connector pin.
Can I keep driving?
If charging does not start or stops unexpectedly, do not rely on the vehicle’s expected electric range for your trip. Driving may be possible if the vehicle shows no other warnings, but follow any hybrid/EV system restrictions.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
