What it means
The control module detects voltage above the expected range in the battery charger enable circuit. The effect on charging depends on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery charger enable circuit carries the signal the control module uses to allow charging. P0E63 sets when the module detects voltage above the expected range on that circuit, so it may not recognize the intended enable state and charging can fail or be interrupted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wire shorted to B+
- Open enable switch
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and observe the charger enable status during a charging attempt.
- With the vehicle safely powered down, inspect the enable wire and connectors for damage, corrosion, or signs the wire is contacting battery positive.
- Check whether the enable switch or control is open when it should provide the expected signal, following the vehicle’s service information.
- Measure the enable circuit and compare its readings with the manufacturer’s specification, checking for a short to B+.
- If the wiring and switch check out, test the control module input according to the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose enable-circuit connector pins.
- Repair wiring shorted to B+.
- Repair or replace a faulty enable switch or control.
- Repair or replace the control module if its input is confirmed faulty.
Can I keep driving?
Do not count on charging until the fault is diagnosed, since charging may not start or may stop partway through. Limit trips if the vehicle’s electric range is low, and follow its high-voltage warning guidance if a system alert or reduced power appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
