OBD-II fault code

P2DF2: Intake Valve Lift Range/Performance System

What it means

The variable intake valve lift system reports range/performance fault on system. Multiple cylinders or system-wide deviation.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The variable intake valve lift system changes how far the intake valves open to suit engine speed and load. The engine controller compares commanded lift with feedback from the system across the cylinders. This code sets when the measured lift response falls outside the expected range or performance window across multiple cylinders or system-wide.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. System-wide mechanism wear
  2. Engine oil pressure low
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power or acceleration
  • Rough idle or engine hesitation

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and actual valve lift, if available, to see when the system-wide deviation occurs.
  2. Check engine oil level and condition because low oil pressure or unsuitable oil can impair a hydraulically operated lift mechanism.
  3. Inspect the lift mechanism and its connectors and wiring for wear, damage, loose connections, or contamination.
  4. Check oil pressure under the conditions specified by the manufacturer to rule out inadequate supply to the lift system.
  5. Test the lift position sensor and related circuits against the manufacturer's specification before replacing components.
  6. If oil supply, wiring, and sensor readings are sound, inspect the mechanism for wear and verify lift operation across the affected cylinders.

Common fixes

  • Correct low oil level or overdue, incorrect, or contaminated engine oil.
  • Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure loose lift-system connectors.
  • Replace a lift position sensor that fails testing against the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair or replace worn variable-lift mechanism components after confirming system-wide wear.

Can I keep driving?

Drive gently only if the engine temperature is normal and power remains adequate; avoid hard acceleration. Reduced power or rough running can worsen, and an overheating warning means stop safely and switch off the engine.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
