OBD-II fault code

P2D83: Battery Charger B Input Current Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

The input current sensor of battery charger B reports a circuit low condition. Charging current measurement is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Battery charger B's input current sensor measures current entering that charger so the control module can assess charging operation. This code sets when the sensor circuit signal is too low, which can make the reported input current unreliable and lead the system to limit, interrupt, or prevent charging.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Current sensor offset drifted low
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare charger B input-current readings with charging status and other available scan-tool data to confirm the low reading.
  2. With charging safely stopped, inspect charger B's current sensor connector and harness for corrosion, damage, loose pins, or chafing.
  3. Using the manufacturer's wiring information, check the sensor signal circuit for a short to ground and for excessive connector contact resistance.
  4. Test the current sensor and its circuit against the manufacturer's specification, including whether the sensor reading is plausible during a controlled charging attempt.
  5. Repair the signal wiring or connector, or replace the sensor if it fails testing, then verify that the fault clears and charging operates normally.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose charger B sensor connector pins.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground.
  • Replace the input current sensor if its output is below specification after wiring checks.
  • Repair damaged harness wiring to the charger B sensor.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may limit, interrupt, or refuse charging, and limp mode may be active; avoid relying on a charge session until the reported current is trustworthy. Arrange repair promptly and do not open or probe high-voltage charging equipment.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
