What it means
The output voltage of the inductive charger does not match the commanded value within tolerance. Air-gap variation, load mismatch, or coil aging.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The inductive charger transfers energy from the charging pad to the vehicle battery across a gap between their coils. The controller compares charger output voltage with its commanded value and sets P2D36 when the output does not track that command within the allowed range, potentially because of pad gap, coil aging, or battery-pack conditions.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Air gap between pads varies
- Charger coil aged
- Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and related charging codes to determine whether the voltage mismatch occurred during an active charge and at what charging conditions.
- Use live data during a supported charging session to compare commanded and measured charger output voltage.
- Check that the vehicle is positioned correctly and that the charging surfaces are clean and free of damage that could change the coil gap.
- Inspect accessible charger and battery charging connectors and wiring for looseness, corrosion, or physical damage.
- If positioning and connections are sound, have the charger coils and battery condition checked against the manufacturer's specifications.
Common fixes
- Reposition the vehicle on the charging pad and clear debris from the charging surfaces.
- Repair a damaged or poorly seated accessible charger connection.
- Replace a charger coil that fails the manufacturer's output checks.
- Address a confirmed battery-pack imbalance using the manufacturer's service procedure.
Can I keep driving?
If charging is slow or unavailable, use another approved charging method if possible and plan for reduced electric range. Avoid relying on the vehicle for a trip that requires full battery charge, and stop safely if a high-voltage warning appears or drive power is lost.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
