What it means
The HV battery pack heater does not raise battery temperature within the calibrated time window. Heater element aged or supply current insufficient.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The hybrid or EV battery pack heater warms the high-voltage battery when conditions require it so the pack can operate and charge within its intended temperature range. The controller sets P2D38 when battery temperature fails to rise as expected within the calibrated time, which can point to weak heater output or insufficient supply current.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Heater element aged - low output
- Supply current insufficient
- Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and battery temperature history to confirm the ambient and pack conditions when the heater performance fault was recorded.
- Check live battery temperature and heater command data during a supported warm-up event to see whether the heater is commanded and temperature responds.
- Inspect accessible heater wiring, connectors, and fuses for damage, corrosion, or signs of overheating.
- Check the heater supply and current using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure, without probing high-voltage circuits unless qualified.
- If heater supply is adequate, have the heater element and battery-pack condition assessed against the manufacturer's specifications.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose or damaged heater connector or accessible wiring.
- Replace a failed heater supply component identified by testing.
- Replace the heater element if it does not produce the specified output.
- Address a confirmed battery-pack imbalance using the manufacturer's service procedure.
Can I keep driving?
In cold weather, charging may be restricted and electric range or power may drop while the pack remains cold. Avoid relying on full electric performance until diagnosed, and stop safely if the vehicle displays a high-voltage warning or loses drive power.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
