What it means
The control circuit of camshaft profile actuator B (intake side) on bank 1 reports a control circuit high condition. Cam profile B (high-lift or VTEC-style) cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Camshaft Profile Actuator B on Bank 1 controls the intake cam's alternate profile, such as a higher-lift mode. This code sets when the control circuit voltage is above its expected range, which can occur with a wire shorted to battery voltage or an open actuator coil.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control wire shorted to B+
- Open actuator coil
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and related camshaft codes to identify when the Bank 1 intake profile actuator circuit fault set.
- Inspect the Bank 1 intake-side Profile Actuator B connector and harness for broken wires, corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins.
- Check the control wire for a short to battery voltage, focusing on damaged insulation that could contact a powered wire.
- Test the control circuit and connector for an open or unwanted voltage using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the harness is intact, test the actuator coil against the manufacturer's specification for an internal open.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or repair a loose Bank 1 actuator connector terminal.
- Repair the control wire shorted to battery voltage.
- Repair an open in the actuator control wire.
- Replace Bank 1 intake Profile Actuator B if its coil is open.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and high engine speeds because the Bank 1 intake cam may not switch profiles reliably, reducing power and potentially causing rough running or stalling. If it stalls or runs very roughly, stop driving until the circuit is diagnosed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
