What it means
Voltage on the A/C distribution valve A control line is below the expected window. Usually a short to ground or a shorted solenoid coil.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
A solenoid-operated A/C refrigerant distribution valve routes refrigerant through the air-conditioning system. P2612 identifies low voltage on the control circuit for valve A, which can occur when the wire is shorted to ground or the solenoid draws the circuit low; it does not by itself identify the valve's routing arrangement.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control wire shorted to ground
- Internal short in the valve solenoid
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Air conditioning may not cool as expected
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and related A/C codes, and confirm whether the fault coincides with poor cooling.
- Identify valve A from vehicle service information, then inspect its connector and harness for chafing, corrosion, bent pins, or moisture that could pull the circuit low.
- Check the valve A solenoid coil for an internal short using the manufacturer's procedure.
- With the valve disconnected as specified, test the control wire for a short to ground and inspect connector pin contact.
- If the coil and wiring pass, check the controller's valve A output under the manufacturer's test procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose valve A connector pins.
- Repair control-wire insulation that is shorting to ground.
- Replace the valve A solenoid if testing confirms an internal short.
- Repair the controller output only if circuit testing identifies it as the source of the low reading.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally, driving is generally possible, though A/C cooling may be reduced or unavailable. Do not rely on the air conditioner to clear the windscreen until the fault is addressed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
