What it means
The camshaft position signal output circuit is open or has an open-circuit fault. This code concerns the output circuit, not necessarily the camshaft sensor itself.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The camshaft position signal output circuit carries a timing signal from the engine controller to another connected system or module. P2614 sets when that output circuit is open, including a broken wire, a poor terminal connection, or a failed output driver; it does not necessarily mean the camshaft sensor itself has failed.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open output wiring
- Internal ECU output driver fault
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Engine may crank longer, run poorly, or fail to start
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and related camshaft or crankshaft codes, and note whether the engine cranks longer or has starting trouble.
- Inspect the camshaft signal output connector for a pushed-back pin, loose fit, corrosion, or damaged wiring.
- Use vehicle wiring information to identify both ends of the output circuit, then check continuity through the harness for an open.
- Check connector terminal fit and verify the circuit is not being interrupted by a damaged splice or harness section.
- If the circuit is intact, test the engine controller's signal output using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Reseat a pushed-back terminal and secure the connector.
- Repair an open or damaged camshaft signal output wire.
- Restore a poor connector or splice connection.
- Repair or replace the controller only if its output driver is confirmed faulty.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine starts and runs normally, a short trip may be possible, but the engine can crank longer, run poorly, or fail to start. Avoid trips where a no-start or loss of power would create a hazard.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
