What it means
The engine controller's internal soak-time/engine-off timer fails its plausibility check — for example readings claim instant cool-down or never-cooled. Cold-start enrichment, EVAP and catalyst monitors depend on this timer; a fault freezes those readiness monitors.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The ECM or PCM keeps track of how long the engine has been off, helping determine whether the engine is cold and whether certain emissions checks can run. P2610 sets when that internal engine-off timer fails a plausibility check, such as reporting no cool-down or an implausible instant cool-down; cold-start, EVAP, and catalyst readiness checks may then be affected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- ECU internal timer fault
- Keep-alive memory power intermittent
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Cold-start idle or fueling behavior may be affected
- Emissions readiness monitors may not complete
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and note any other codes before clearing anything, since the timer fault may appear alongside a loss of controller memory power.
- Compare the scan tool's engine-off or soak-time data with the vehicle's actual shutdown and restart history to confirm the implausible reading.
- Inspect the ECM/PCM power, ground, and keep-alive memory supply connections for looseness, corrosion, or damaged wiring.
- Check whether the battery or controller supply has been interrupted and whether other settings or learned data are also being lost.
- If supplies and connections are sound, check for applicable controller software updates and test the internal timer according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a loose or corroded ECM/PCM power or ground connection.
- Repair an intermittent keep-alive memory power wire or connection.
- Reflash the ECM/PCM if an applicable software update addresses timer performance.
- Replace the controller only if testing confirms an internal timer failure.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally, limited driving is generally possible, but cold-start behavior may be affected and emissions readiness monitors may not complete. Allow time for diagnosis before an emissions inspection.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
