What it means
A/C Compressor Motor Phase U Current Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic: the signal is intermittent or erratic. Often a loose connector or chafed wiring; a wiggle test often locates it.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The phase U current sensor monitors one electrical phase of the A/C compressor motor, and the control module uses its signal to control the compressor. P0EB8 sets when the phase U signal repeatedly becomes erratic or intermittent rather than staying consistent.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Current sensor failed
- Wiring fault
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid system warning light
- Air conditioning may cut in and out
- Cooling may be intermittent
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame and live-data history to identify when the phase U signal drops out or jumps, and compare it with phase V.
- Inspect the phase U connector for incomplete seating, loose pins, corrosion, or movement at the locking tab.
- Examine the phase U harness for chafing, strain, or damage where it passes near the compressor and nearby components.
- Monitor the phase U signal while carefully moving the accessible harness to check for a movement-related dropout.
- If the wiring remains stable, test the phase U sensor and its ground and signal circuits against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure the phase U connector.
- Clean or repair loose or corroded terminals.
- Repair chafed or strained phase U wiring and secure its routing.
- Replace the phase U sensor if the signal remains intermittent with sound wiring.
Can I keep driving?
Intermittent A/C operation can leave the cabin without reliable cooling or defogging, so arrange diagnosis soon and avoid depending on the system for visibility. Follow any hybrid-system warning instructions if one appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
