What it means
The A/C compressor motor phase U current sensor reports a fault.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The phase U current sensor monitors current in one of the A/C compressor motor's electrical phases, and its signal helps the control module manage compressor operation. P0EB4 sets when the phase U sensor circuit reports a fault, without specifying a low, high, or implausible reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Current sensor failed
- Wiring fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid system warning light
- Air conditioning may not cool
- Cooling may be intermittent
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live phase U current-sensor data, and note whether phase V data or related A/C faults are also present.
- Inspect the phase U sensor connector and accessible wiring for loose terminals, corrosion, damage, or signs of heat.
- Check the phase U circuit connections and continuity using the vehicle service information and manufacturer's specification.
- Compare phase U sensor output with the other phase readings under the same operating conditions, using the vehicle's specified test method.
- If wiring and connections pass, test the phase U sensor and compressor inverter as directed by the service information.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose phase U sensor connector.
- Repair damaged phase U wiring or corroded terminals.
- Replace the phase U current sensor if its output fails the specified test.
- Repair or replace the compressor inverter if testing identifies it as the source of the fault.
Can I keep driving?
A/C may stop cooling or work intermittently; avoid relying on it for defogging or temperature control until repaired. If a hybrid-system warning or reduced-power condition appears, follow the vehicle's instructions and have the system diagnosed promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
