What it means
The ECM detects a intermittent/erratic fault on the a/c compressor motor current sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The A/C compressor motor current sensor provides feedback that the control module uses to manage compressor operation. P0EB3 sets when that feedback becomes erratic or drops in and out, so the module cannot rely on it consistently.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor connector not seated
- Noisy ground reference
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid system warning light
- Air conditioning may cut in and out
- Cooling may be intermittent
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live A/C current-sensor readings for dropouts or sudden jumps when the fault occurs.
- Inspect the compressor current-sensor connector for incomplete seating, loose pins, corrosion, or moisture.
- With the system made safe according to the vehicle service information, inspect the sensor wiring and ground reference for damage or poor connections.
- Use a scan-tool graph or a careful harness movement test to see whether vibration or movement makes the reading unstable.
- If the connection and wiring are sound, test the sensor signal and ground against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure the current-sensor connector.
- Clean or repair a poor ground or corroded connector terminal.
- Repair chafed or damaged sensor wiring.
- Replace the current sensor if its signal remains erratic with sound wiring and connections.
Can I keep driving?
If A/C operation cuts in and out but the vehicle drives normally, avoid relying on cabin cooling and arrange diagnosis soon. If a hybrid-system warning appears or the vehicle limits power, follow the vehicle's warning instructions and stop safely if operation becomes abnormal.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
