OBD-II fault code

P0E23: Drive Motor Inverter Temperature Sensor G Circuit

What it means

The drive motor inverter temperature sensor G circuit has an electrical fault, so its reading may be unavailable or unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Inverter temperature sensor G reports temperature at a monitored point in the drive motor inverter, which manages electrical power to the motor. The control module sets this circuit code when sensor G’s electrical signal is faulty or unavailable, so it cannot rely on that temperature reading to protect the inverter.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare sensor G’s reported temperature with other inverter temperature readings and ambient conditions for an implausible or missing value.
  2. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, locate sensor G and inspect its connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, looseness, or heat exposure.
  3. Check sensor G’s supply, ground, and signal circuit for opens or shorts using the manufacturer’s wiring information and safety procedure.
  4. Measure the sensor circuit response and compare it with the manufacturer’s specification while checking for intermittent changes when the harness is moved gently.
  5. If wiring and connections pass, test or replace sensor G as directed, then verify the inverter temperature reading is plausible.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded sensor G connector.
  • Repair damaged, open, or shorted wiring in sensor G’s circuit.
  • Replace sensor G if it fails the specified electrical test.
  • Clear the fault and confirm the inverter temperature data is credible after repair.

Can I keep driving?

Limit speed, acceleration, and sustained high loads if the vehicle reduces motor power or warns of an inverter fault; an unreliable temperature signal can trigger protective shutdown. Stop safely if the vehicle warns that shutdown is imminent.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
