What it means
The drive motor inverter temperature sensor G circuit signal is below the expected range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Inverter temperature sensor G measures temperature at a monitored point in the drive motor inverter and sends a signal to the control module. This low circuit code sets when that signal falls below the expected electrical range, commonly because the signal is shorted to ground or the sensor itself is shorted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced motor power or torque
- Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check whether sensor G reports an implausibly low temperature or a fixed value compared with other inverter sensors.
- With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect sensor G’s connector and wiring for corrosion, damaged insulation, loose pins, or contact with ground.
- Test the sensor G signal wire for a short to ground and check the connector terminals for excessive contact resistance using the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Measure sensor G’s circuit response and compare it with the manufacturer’s specification to distinguish a sensor short from a wiring fault.
- If the wiring and connections pass, test or replace sensor G, then confirm its live temperature reading is plausible.
Common fixes
- Repair a signal wire shorted to ground in sensor G’s circuit.
- Clean or repair corroded sensor G connector pins and restore sound terminal contact.
- Replace sensor G if it is internally shorted or fails the specified test.
- Clear the code and verify sensor G data against other inverter temperature readings.
Can I keep driving?
Limit speed and high-load driving if motor power is reduced or an inverter warning appears, because the module may not have a trustworthy temperature reading and can restrict or shut down the drive system. Stop safely if a shutdown warning occurs.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
