What it means
The hybrid control module monitors the generator's phase W current sensor circuit to measure current in that motor phase. It sets this code when the circuit has an electrical fault that prevents the current signal from being read reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The generator creates electrical power through three motor phases, and the hybrid control module uses the phase W current sensor to track current in that specific phase. P0E08 sets when an electrical fault makes the phase W sensor circuit signal unreliable, rather than simply out of range.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Current sensor failed
- Wiring fault
Symptoms
- Hybrid/EV system warning light on
- Reduced power or altered hybrid operation
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan for related hybrid or inverter codes to see when the phase W signal became unreliable.
- Check live data for generator phase W current and compare its behavior with phases U and V under the same operating conditions.
- With the high-voltage system made safe according to the vehicle service procedure, inspect the phase W sensor connector and harness for damage, moisture, loose terminals, or backed-out pins.
- Check the phase W sensor circuit wiring for continuity, shorts, and poor connections using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specifications.
- If the wiring and connections pass, test the phase W current sensor and its supply and ground circuits to determine whether the sensor has failed.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged or loose phase W sensor wiring and terminals.
- Clean or repair corroded connector contacts and ensure the connector is fully seated.
- Replace a faulty phase W current sensor.
- Repair a related supply or ground fault identified during circuit testing.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the vehicle has reduced power or unpredictable hybrid operation; arrange a safe stop if propulsion becomes unreliable. Continued use can further limit generator and hybrid operation.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
