What it means
The generator phase W current sensor signal is outside the expected range or does not respond as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The phase W current sensor reports current in the generator's W phase to the hybrid control module. P0E09 sets when that signal is electrically plausible but its value or response does not match the module's expected range or behavior, which can result from sensor offset or drift.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor offset drifted
- Magnetic offset
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Hybrid/EV system warning light may turn on
- Reduced power or charging performance
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and related hybrid codes to identify the conditions when the phase W reading became implausible.
- Compare live phase W current with phases U and V during the same operating conditions, looking for a persistent offset or response that differs from the other phases.
- With the high-voltage system made safe under the vehicle service procedure, inspect the phase W sensor and nearby wiring for damage, loose connections, contamination, or magnetic material near the sensor.
- Check the phase W sensor circuit supply, ground, and signal wiring against the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specifications.
- If the circuit checks pass, test the phase W sensor for offset or drift using the manufacturer's procedure and replace it if it is outside the calibration window.
Common fixes
- Remove foreign magnetic material near the phase W sensor if the service procedure identifies it as a cause.
- Repair loose, damaged, or poorly connected phase W sensor wiring.
- Replace a phase W current sensor with confirmed offset drift or age-related failure.
- Clear the code and verify that the phase W reading tracks correctly after repair.
Can I keep driving?
If power or charging performance is reduced, limit driving to what is needed to reach a safe location and avoid heavy acceleration or long trips. The vehicle may further restrict hybrid operation if the phase W reading remains unreliable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
