OBD-II fault code

P0E04: Generator Phase V Current Sensor Circuit

What it means

The hybrid control module monitors the generator's phase V current sensor circuit to measure current in that motor phase. It sets this code when the circuit has an electrical fault that prevents the current signal from being read reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The generator’s phase V current sensor measures current in the V phase of the hybrid motor-generator. The hybrid control module monitors this sensor circuit and sets P0E04 when an electrical fault prevents it from reading phase V current reliably.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Current sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault

Symptoms

  • Hybrid/EV system warning light on
  • Reduced power or altered hybrid operation

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all hybrid system modules and save freeze-frame data, then compare phase V current readings with the other generator phase readings.
  2. Inspect the phase V sensor connector and accessible wiring for damage, loose connections, moisture, or corrosion.
  3. Check the sensor circuit’s power, ground, and signal connections using the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer’s procedure.
  4. Test harness continuity and check for shorts between the phase V sensor wires and other circuits as specified by the manufacturer.
  5. If wiring and connections pass, test the phase V current sensor against the manufacturer’s specification before replacing it.

Common fixes

  • Secure or clean a loose or corroded phase V sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged phase V sensor wiring or its connections.
  • Replace the generator phase V current sensor if it fails the specified circuit test.
  • Clear the fault and confirm phase V current data is plausible during a controlled system check.

Can I keep driving?

The hybrid system may reduce power or change how it uses the generator, so avoid hard acceleration and long trips if power is limited. Stop in a safe place if the vehicle warns of a hybrid system fault or cannot maintain normal operation.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
