OBD-II fault code

P0E02: Generator Phase U Current Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

The generator phase U current sensor circuit signal is below the expected range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The generator’s phase U current sensor measures current in the U phase of the hybrid motor-generator. The hybrid control module sets P0E02 when the phase U sensor signal falls below its expected range, indicating a possible signal short to ground, sensor short, or poor connector contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal sensor short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Hybrid/EV system warning light on
  • Reduced power or altered hybrid operation

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare the phase U sensor reading with phases V and other generator data to confirm the low signal is specific to phase U.
  2. Inspect the phase U sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, pin damage, or insulation rubbed through against ground.
  3. Check connector contact condition and verify the phase U sensor’s power and ground connections using the wiring diagram.
  4. With the circuit safely isolated as directed by service information, test the phase U signal wire for a short to ground and check continuity to the module.
  5. Test the phase U sensor output against the manufacturer’s specification to distinguish a sensor short from a wiring fault.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose phase U sensor connector pins.
  • Repair the phase U signal wire if it is shorted to ground or damaged.
  • Replace the generator phase U current sensor if its internal signal is shorted.
  • Clear the code and verify phase U current data during system operation.

Can I keep driving?

The hybrid system may reduce power or alter generator operation because it cannot trust the phase U reading. Drive gently and stop safely if power becomes severely limited or a hybrid warning instructs you to stop.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
