OBD-II fault code

P0E05: Generator Phase V Current Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The generator phase V current sensor signal is outside the expected range or does not respond as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The generator’s phase V current sensor measures current in the V phase of the hybrid motor-generator. The hybrid control module sets P0E05 when the phase V signal is electrically present but its value or response does not match the expected range, which may reflect offset drift, magnetic interference, or a sensor element outside calibration.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor offset drifted
  2. Magnetic offset
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Hybrid/EV system warning light on
  • Reduced power or altered hybrid operation

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare phase V current readings with phases U and any other available generator phase data under the same operating conditions.
  2. Check whether the fault occurs at zero or low generator current, where a phase V sensor offset may be easiest to identify.
  3. Inspect the phase V sensor and nearby wiring for damage, loose mounting, or sources of magnetic interference identified by the vehicle service information.
  4. Check the phase V sensor connector and wiring for poor contacts or electrical faults that could distort its reading.
  5. If the circuit is intact, test phase V sensor offset and response using the manufacturer’s procedure to determine whether it is outside calibration.

Common fixes

  • Correct a loose phase V sensor connection or damaged wiring affecting its signal.
  • Remove or correct a confirmed source of magnetic interference near the phase V sensor, following service information.
  • Replace the phase V current sensor if its offset or response fails the manufacturer’s test.
  • Clear the code and confirm phase V readings track expected generator operation.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced power or altered hybrid operation can occur, so drive gently and avoid situations requiring strong acceleration. If a hybrid system warning escalates or the vehicle limits power substantially, stop safely and seek assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
