OBD-II fault code

P0D20: Battery Charger A Output Voltage Performance

What it means

Battery charger A output voltage does not meet the expected performance criteria. Charging operation may be affected.

How it works

Battery charger A converts incoming charging power into output for the vehicle's battery system. P0D20 sets when the module finds charger A's output voltage does not meet its performance criteria, without identifying a specific too-low condition.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Battery charger fault
  2. Charging circuit or connection fault

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame and charging live data for charger A's commanded and measured output voltage, along with any charger or battery codes.
  2. Check whether the fault occurs with one charging source or cable, then inspect the charge inlet, cable, and charger A connections for damage or poor seating.
  3. Inspect accessible charger A wiring and connectors for corrosion, looseness, or heat damage, following the manufacturer's shutdown procedure.
  4. Use the scan tool's charging test, if available, to compare charger A's output response with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the connections and input are sound but output performance remains out of specification, test charger A and its charging circuit using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reseat or replace a damaged external charging cable or connector, if confirmed faulty.
  • Clean or repair poor connections in charger A's circuit.
  • Repair damaged charging-circuit wiring.
  • Replace charger A if its output fails the manufacturer's test.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid depending on the vehicle for a trip that requires a full charge if charging repeatedly stops or remains slower than expected. Stop charging if the cable, inlet, or vehicle shows heat damage or a charging safety warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
