What it means
The battery charger input circuit reports a circuit/open condition. AC mains/EVSE input may be impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The onboard charger receives AC power from the mains supply or EVSE through its input circuit before converting it for battery charging. P0D80 sets when the charger detects an open or interrupted input path, so charging may fail to start or stop.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open or faulty charger input wiring or connection
- Fault in the onboard charger input circuit
Symptoms
- Charging may not start or may stop
How to diagnose it
- Check the charge session record or scan-tool freeze-frame data to see whether the fault occurred at plug-in, during charging, or after an interruption.
- Verify the outlet and EVSE are supplying power and that the charging connector is fully seated at both the vehicle and supply ends.
- Inspect accessible charger input connectors and wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or heat marks, following the vehicle's safe shutdown instructions.
- Check relevant fuses and input-circuit connections using the vehicle's service information.
- Have a qualified technician test continuity through the onboard charger input circuit and verify the charger itself if the external supply and wiring are sound.
Common fixes
- Fully seat the charging connector and EVSE plug.
- Repair a damaged or loose charger input connection.
- Replace a failed fuse only after checking for the cause of its failure.
- Repair the onboard charger input circuit if testing confirms an internal open.
Can I keep driving?
Charging may not begin or may stop, but this code alone does not indicate that the vehicle's propulsion system has failed. Do not rely on an incomplete charge for a necessary trip; arrange charging elsewhere and have the input circuit checked.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
