OBD-II fault code

P0D83: Battery Charger Input Circuit High

What it means

The battery charger input circuit reports a circuit high condition. AC mains/EVSE input may be impaired.

How it works

The onboard charger monitors the AC input from the EVSE or mains supply before converting it for battery charging. P0D83 sets when the input reading is above the expected range, which can result from an input circuit short to power or a faulty connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Charger input above expected range
  2. Input circuit short to power
  3. Faulty wiring or connection

Symptoms

  • Charging may be limited or may stop

How to diagnose it

  1. Review charging-session data or freeze-frame readings to see when the high input was detected and whether it occurs with one charging source.
  2. Stop the session and check the EVSE and supply for visible damage or a fault indication before trying a compatible known-good source.
  3. Inspect accessible charger input wiring and connectors for damage, loose terminals, or evidence of contact with a power conductor.
  4. Have a qualified technician measure the input and test for a short to power, comparing results with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If external supply and wiring test normally, check the onboard charger's input sensing and circuitry for an internal fault.

Common fixes

  • Reseat the vehicle and EVSE connectors after checking them for damage.
  • Repair wiring or terminals that are shorted to a power conductor.
  • Correct a confirmed EVSE or supply fault before charging again.
  • Repair or replace the onboard charger if testing confirms an internal input fault.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may be limited or stopped to protect the vehicle. Do not continue using a charging source that repeatedly triggers this fault; have the source and vehicle input checked before another session.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
